Injured By a Dog in CT? Then You NEED To Know This From our Connecticut Dog Bite Lawyers!

Our Connecticut dog bite lawyers have been contacted by many people who have been injured by a dog. The types of Connecticut dog bite cases that our accident and injury lawyers have seen vary and include some or all of the following: a woman tried to break up a dogfight involving her dog and another dog when one of the dogs bit off part of her finger; a 10-year-old boy went onto the neighbor's property to retrieve a ball and was bitten by the neighbor's dog who was inside of an electric fence; people who have gone on to the property of another and were bitten by the property owner's dog; relatives who were bitten by a family member's dog; a party guest who was bitten by the host's dog; workers who were on the property of another and were bitten by the homeowner's dog; people were bitten in dog parks; people who were bitten on public streets; and many other individuals who were injured by a biting dog. We have even accepted cases where the person was injured by a dog without being bitten.

So what liability does the owner or keeper of the dog who causes injury to the person or property of another? CT has a dog bite statute found at Connecticut General Statute section 22 - 357. The statute provides that if any dog causes damage to either the body or property of another person, then the owner or keeper of the dog shall be liable for the damages caused unless, at the time the damage was sustained, the injured party was committing a trespass or other tort or was teasing, tormenting or abusing the dog. In other words, in Connecticut there is strict liability on the part of the owner or keeper of the dog that causes injuries or damages to the person or property of another provided that one of the limited exceptions is not present. This means that you do not have to show that the owner or keeper of the dog knew that the dog was dangerous or that the dog had previously bitten someone before.

So what should you do if you have been injured by a dog in the State of Connecticut, either through a dog bite or by being knocked down or run into? You should immediately contact the local police or dog warden to investigate the case and to file a report. You should immediately contact an experienced Connecticut dog bite injury lawyer so that you can understand your rights and find out what you should be doing. You should also seek immediate medical care, especially if your skin has been broken by either the nails or teeth of the dog because the risk of infection is quite great and could cause very significant injuries if left untreated.

The importance of contacting experienced Connecticut dog bite attorney cannot be stressed enough. There are a great number of things that you should be doing and there are also a number of things that you should not be doing immediately after a dog bite or dog injury. If you do something that you should not do or if you do not do something that you should do then you could run the risk of significantly undermining your case.
