A Terrifying Experience
I recently flew from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Salt Lake City, Utah while returning from vacation. Prior to taking off, the pilot announced that he would leave the “fasten seatbelt” sign on as we would be experiencing a great deal of turbulence. Almost immediately after takeoff, the plane began bouncing up and down and moving from side to side. The movements were so violent that a number of people inside the plane began to scream.
Naturally, everyone on the plane was thinking about death as they thought the plane was going to crash. Through this extremely frightening experience, the pilot, along with the flight crew, said nothing and instead allowed the passengers to be left to their own terrifying thoughts. It was at this time that an older gentleman seated next to my daughter- who obviously could tell she was quite concerned- said that he lives in Albuquerque and flies to Salt Lake City on a regular basis.
He explained that due to geographical conditions such as the mountainous region, the fluctuations in air temperature, and the air current that rapidly moves through this area, turbulence was quite a standard occurrence. He explained that this happens all the time and that these airplanes were designed in such a way that they could sustain hurricane-force winds without having any problems. He told her not to worry. As a result of the gentleman explaining to my daughter these simple facts, all of us immediately began to feel much better about the situation and were no longer thinking about crashing or dying.
The Takeaway
This situation reminded me of what it is that our lawyers and support staff do here at our law firm. After someone has been injured in some type of an accident, they will be experiencing a great deal of uncertainty, trauma, stress, and pain. They will likely be unsure as to what they need to do and what they should not do. It is a terrifying situation and it creates a great amount of anxiety. Much like the gentleman that sat next to my daughter on the airplane, we will provide you with a lot of great information and will tell you not to worry. We will tell you what you need to do, what you should not do, and will explain every aspect of the process to the injured party, as well as answering any questions that they may have.
The most important message we want to get across is this:
The only thing you need to do is to get better as quickly as possible. We will take care of everything else. You do not have to be worried or concerned about anything other than getting better. Once we explain the entire process to you and provide you with our advice and counsel, you will begin to feel much better since you know that there is a path forward and you will be guided down that path every step of the way.
