Around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, a wrong way head on crash on I-95 in Old Lyme CT led to the deaths of three women, including a mother and a duaghter, and the serious injury of one man.
Frank Sundstrom, 51, of 89 Nausauket Rd., Warwick, RI, was driving the wrong way, headed North on I-95 Southbound.
A 9-1-1 call came in just before the crash: “I’m traveling southbound on 95 at the Baldwin bridge and I just passed a wrong way driver on the left hand shoulder.”
Within moments, the two cars collided, almost exactly head on.
Not much is left of the Nissan that was carrying three women southbound on I-95. In the vehicle were Tamara Nolin, 71, of 17 Pepperwood Lane, Branford; 90-year-old Marjorie Minore, of 27 Allen Rd., North Haven, and her 63-year-old daughter Barbara Prato, of 12 Maple St., East Haven. All three women were killed in the crash.
The next 9-1-1 calls became far more distressing: “Route 95 Southbound, Old Saybrook. Two cars completely destroyed on the highway,” said one caller; “one of the cars is completely demolished. I see one car kind of on the ramp, going into the other lane, and the other on the right hand side of the road” said another caller.
Sundstrom suffered what are being reported as serious injuries in the crash. Old Lyme CT Police are still investigating why Sundstrom was heading the wrong way on the highway.
